Insulin and Carbohydrates

Blood sugar levels are affected by different carbohydrates. Some carbohydrates cause unhealthy rises in your blood sugar levels

We can't live without a sufficient amount of glucose in our bloodstream. It is your bodies main source of energy. High levels of blood sugar is what we will call "too much of a good thing".

After eating carbohydrates you blood sugar levels raise. Then the pancreas secretes a hormone called insulin. Insulin is what keeps your blood sugar levels stable. Insulin prevents sustained high blood sugar.

The problem occurs when you eat the wrong kind of carbohydrates. These will cause your blood sugar levels to jump higher than other carbs. The body in turn secretes insulin in larger amounts. After the blood sugar stabilizes there is excess insulin left in the body.

Extra insulin will make you hungry before you are really supposed to be hungry. You will likely then eat the same thing that caused the problem in the first place. You can see where this is going.

Insulin will cause you to store fat. Even though you are on a good diet the eating of the wrong carbohydrates will increase insulin and thus store extra fat. You can see where this is going, too.

So, the moral to this story is to not eat the wrong kind of carbohydrates. Stay on a diet of healthy carbohydrates.

Refer to the Glycemic Index to find the right kind of carbs and to avoid the wrong kind.
